Scholars approach the series with their projects; the series provides the infrastructure, access to copyrighted source texts, typesetting skills, and the scholarly network to ensure quality.

The process operates on the model of a peer-reviewed academic journal, applied to books. A scholar submits a translation or a book project. The editorial board conducts an initial assessment, and if the project is deemed viable, names a scientific editor for it. Two expert reviewers are then formally commissioned to evaluate the translation, introduction, and annotations under blind peer review.

If the evaluation is positive, the scientific editor helps the scholar complete the work, before the executive editor undertakes typesetting. The revised manuscript is returned for validation of content and formatting, and a final external reviewer checks for remaining errors before press.
